Pergolese’s Stabat mater is probably one of the more fascinating works in the history of music. Based on a liturgical text of the thirteenth century on the suffering of the Holy Mary, it quickly became famous throughout Europe.
About ten years later, Johann Sebastian Bach took over this work to make a kind of parody of it, exercise quite common at the time.
